FAQ

  • How do I know if I should hire an architect?

Architects are problem solvers who love a good puzzle. Whether you’re building a new home or renovating/expanding an existing one, architects have a unique skillset to capture your needs/wants and form them into a tangible product. In addition, if your project is over a certain size or requires a level of expertise in navigating city zoning, an architect would be required to acquire a permit.

  • How do I know if Commonplace Building Workshop is the right fit for my project?

Coming from a background as space planners in complex, commercial projects, our team loves working through the flows and layouts of new homes and renovations with our clients. We are uniquely skilled at reworking existing plans of old homes to make the space more functional for modern families. In some instances, we’ve helped a client decide they can achieve all they’re looking to in their existing footprint without needing to fund an expansion.

  • How much do your architectural services cost?

Each project is different, but we generally charge an hourly rate for renovations and expansions and a lump sum fee for new construction. This would be discussed in greater detail with you in a discovery call and would be outlined in a proposal for our services if you were interested in proceeding.

  • How do I start a project with Commonplace Building Workshop?

The process starts by emailing us (jenn@commonplacebw.com), calling us (615-681-7938), or filling out the Contact form on this webpage. Once we hear from you, we’ll reach out about scheduling a discovery call to hear more about your project. If we need more detailed information to generate a proposal for architectural design services, we would discuss an on-site meeting. Following those 1-2 meetings, you would receive a proposal for architectural design services from us. Once that proposal was signed we would begin work on our project.

  • How long does your design process typically take?

This varies greatly from project to project. Some of the factors that may impact length of the process include: square footage/scope of the project (ie interior renovation of rooms versus whole house renovation, expansion, new construction, etc), location (rural, City of Dallas, Historic or Conservation District within Dallas, etc), and availability of client for meetings and decision making.

  • Do you work with specific contractors?

We are not locked in to working with specific contractors to build our client’s projects, but we do have local contacts we have worked with and can recommend once you reach that point in the process. Our team can assist client’s in interviewing and selecting a contractor as needed. In addition, we are available through construction to answer questions and provide revisions as well as supervise work if the client is interested in those services.
